CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE

Mike yelled at the suspect, approaching him with his pistol at the low ready. “Stop, police! Get your fucking hands in the air!”

Mike knew he was only about twenty feet from the suspect and had no cover whatsoever. He had a feeling of vulnerability and anticipation flowing through him. Time slowed down, and without thinking of it, he slowed his breathing like they’d taught him to do in training. Your training will always kick into high gear in a potential life-or-death situation.

Reggie came up next to Mike and shouted in a commanding voice, “You better get your fucking hands in the air, or I’ll send you home to Jesus!”

Mike thought, Maybe not Jesus. I think this guy is taking the express elevator south.

The suspect slowly put his hands in the air, but his hood was blocking his face.

Reggie continued to yell in his commanding voice. “Get on your knees! Do it now!”

Reggie and Mike still had the suspect covered with their pistols. Luckily for everyone, the suspect complied, but he answered back in an argumentative tone. “Man! What the fuck? I ain’t done nothing! Why you comin’ up on me yellin’ like that?”

Reggie retorted, “Now, get on the ground, face down.”

The suspect was still complaining about the way they’d ambushed him when he was just walking down the street, but he complied with their commands anyway.

Reggie looked at Mike. “Hook ’em up.”

Mike holstered his pistol and handcuffed the suspect, and Mike patted him down while he was still lying on the ground. The suspect was arguing but not physically resisting.

“Man, this is some serious bullshit. This is police brutality!”

Reggie was feeling his exhaustion and losing his patience at the same time. “Man, you want to see some police brutality? No? You better shut the fuck up, then.”

Mike was slowly starting to realize that this was probably not Tyrone. If it had been Tyrone, he would most likely have run or put up some kind of fight.

Reggie turned to Mike and spoke in a defeated tone. “Get him up and go through him again.”

Mike helped the man up by hooking his hand under the suspect’s armpit and lifting him. Mike pushed the hood off the suspect’s head and face to get a good look at his features. Reggie and Mike looked at each other and wordlessly agreed that this was probably not Tyrone. Their eyes said everything.

Reggie sighed. “Run him.”

Mike looked at the suspect. “What’s your name? You got ID?”

The suspect was obviously still irritated, but he kept his tone calm after Reggie’s warning. “Yeah, it’s in my front pocket.”

Mike pulled out a State of Wisconsin ID and asked the man to verify the information on it. People who were wanted by the law would often carry the ID of a relative that wasn’t wanted.

Mike called in the wanted check on his radio while Reggie asked the suspect some more questions.

“What are you doing here?”

In a defeated voice, the suspect replied, “I’m going to see my guy.”

“Are you on paper?”

The suspect answered, “Yes, probation for burglary.
